aluCine Latin Film+Media Arts Festival presents Latin Canadian Retrospective

May 12, 2016

aluCine Latin Film+Media Arts Festival announces first-ever Latin Canadian film retrospective and companion events.

Crossing Borders / Cruzando Fronteras: 20 years of Latin Canadian Cinema is the name of the first-ever Latin Canadian retrospective presented in the country.

Using the twenty plus years of promotion and support that aluCine and its founders have offered to Latin Canadian films, film producers, artists, and directors as leverage, aluCine has decided to take a step back to reflect and discuss works that have defined our presence and interactions with Canada and of the hemisphere.

On June 1 and 2, aluCine will showcase three programmes encompassing 20 films of all genres and formats highlighting the integral contributions of Latino-Canadian filmmakers to the artistic identity of the Canadian cultural landscape. On June 1, Crossroads and Suspended Memories will kick off the retrospective, presenting works produced during the 1980s and 1990s, respectively. Works produced in the 1980s largely focused on emotional and geographical dislocation and longing of realities that don’t exist anymore, while Latino-Canadian filmmakers of the 1990s produced films that explored the similarities and differences between the North and the South. On June 2, Nomadicity: Wherever You Go will cover the early twenty first century stressing the shift in cultural variables, moral values and systems of power around the borders of the Americas.

aluCine is interested in not only showcasing the evolution of Latin Canadian film, but also in fostering much needed discussion about the past, present, and future of the Latino Canadian community’s artistic expression and production and continued demographic growth within the Greater Toronto Area. The discussion panel, 20 Years in the Making: Independent Latin Canadian Cinema, co-presented by the Latin American Studies Program at University of Toronto, VTAPE, and Canadian Filmmaker Distribution Centre (CFMDC) will bring together five seasoned industry professionals on Latin Canadian film, including aluCine’s Executive Director, Sinara Rozo.

They say “hindsight is 20/20.” With Crossing Borders / Cruzando Fronteras: 20 years of Latin Canadian Cinema, aluCine will look back on the origins of local and international Latin Canadian film production in order to move forward, taking in consideration the creative contexts and supports needed to grow independent Latin Canadian filmmaking in the future.
