MUSIC WORKSHOP by Portos - african bogaloo

Lalo Porto, Luciano Porto and Sergio Elmir present an audio-visual exploration of the African influence in Latin American music contrasting traditional and contemporary. A discussion panel will be supported by vinyl tracks, video samples and live demonstrations.

Luciano Porto is drummer, multi-instrumentalist and composer.  Luciano was born in Brazil and moved to Toronto at  16.  For the past 20 years he has been studying music and performing with instruments such as guitar, bamboo flutes, North and West African percussion, Multiple Brazilian percussion instruments, congas and the accordion. Luciano’s main passion, Afro-percussion started after he first met African drummers in British Columbia,  Senegal and Morocco.  In 2006, Luciano started the project, Mulambo Groove, to feature his own compositions (inspired by Afro-Brazilian traditions). Mulambo Groove performs periodically at many cultural and community events in Toronto, including the Harbourfront Centre 2009 and 2011.   Luciano runs Bavia Arts, a cultural hotspot in the city, and continues to research, study and teach music privately, specializing in Afro-Brazilian percussive traditions. myspace.com/mulambogroove and myspace.com/lucianoporto

As a Brazilian living in Canada for the last 20 years, Lalo Porto has played an active role in forging Toronto’s Afro-Brazilian percussion scene during the last 10 years. He has performed extensively with groups such as Mulambo Groove, Maracatu Nunca Antes, Batucada Carioca, Samba Squad among others. He is keen in developing an acute understanding and appreciation for the origins of Afro-rhythms.
 

Journalist, broadcaster, DJ and events promoter Sergio Elmir has spent the last eight years working within and helping develop Canada’s Latin American community. He is the host/producer of Dos Mundos Radio (on CIUT 89.5FM in Toronto & 101.5FM in Winnipeg) and the creative force behind Funkete, Toronto’s only Tropical Bass monthly party. Recently, Sergio launched DosMundosRadio.com, 2mun2tv and Dos Mundos Arts & Media an incorporated non-profit organization with the intention of creating more opportunities for Canada’s emerging Latino artists.
