Join us for an interactive workshop on making arepas, a beloved Venezuelan dish, presented in partnership with The Stop Community Food Centre. In this hands-on session, we’ll dive into the art of crafting these delectable treats, uncover their cultural significance, and share expert tips to perfect your recipe.
Venezuelan arepas are flat, round corn flour patties that are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, made with just five simple ingredients. This versatile Latin-American staple can be enjoyed plain, as a side, or stuffed with a variety of fillings, from savory meats and cheeses to your favorite toppings.
Whether you're a cooking enthusiast, intrigued by Venezuelan cuisine, or simply eager to explore something new, this workshop is for you. We’ll guide you through each step, from mixing the ingredients to creating the perfect arepa.

The Workshop:
Arepas
You’ll learn the whole process of preparing arepa dough from dried masarepa (a.k.a areparina or arepa flour), salt, and water, through shaping and cooking them on a hot griddle.
Veggie Pabellon
We will make a vegetarian version of the classic arepa pabellón, which has platano maduro (sweet plantain), cheese, and caraotas (black beans).
Reina Pepiada
Reina Pepiada means ‘the Queen of Happiness’, and you’ll understand why after your first bite of these delicious arepas stuffed with a creamy chicken and avocado salad.
Workshop Facilitator
Chef Luis Manuel Córdoba
is a Venezuelan Chef from Maturin City who opened his first restaurant in 2001 in Mérida, a culinary hub in Venezuela. Later, he joined forces with his brother, also a chef, to establish a corporate catering company before moving to Toronto with his family in 2010. He quickly found himself working as the chef of Arepa Café, Toronto’s premier purveyor of authentic Venezuelan arepas. In 2015, they launched The Arepa Republic, an award-winning food truck that serves delicious Venezuelan dishes at events across the GTA. @theareparepublic
